The Green House® Cottage Model: A New Standard of Dignity in Arkansas Eldercare

Making the decision to choose long-term care for a loved one is one of the most significant and emotional steps a family can take. Leaving a home filled with years of memories - holidays, milestones, and everyday moments - can feel overwhelming. Across Arkansas, families are increasingly searching for long-term care options that provide skilled nursing, privacy, and meaningful human connection. The Green House® Cottage model is helping meet that need in a way that feels both compassionate and dignified.

As the only organization in the state licensed to build and operate Green House® Cottages, Southern Administrative Services (SAS) is honored to bring this innovative, nationally recognized model to Arkansas communities. These homes are rooted in the philosophy of The Green House® Project (GHP), a nonprofit committed to ensuring that every person can age with dignity, autonomy, and respect.

Since 2003, the Green House® Project has been reshaping the landscape of long-term and post-acute care nationwide. Instead of replicating institutional nursing home environments, GHP offers a radically different vision: small, home-like cottages where elders are truly at the center of daily life. This approach has positioned Arkansas as a leader in reimagining eldercare.

Unlike traditional nursing homes, Green House® Cottages in Arkansas are intentionally designed to feel like real homes - warm, private, and familiar. Each cottage typically supports just 12 elders, fostering closer relationships and a stronger sense of community. Every resident has a private bedroom and bathroom, ensuring comfort, independence, and the personal space they deserve. Shared living areas including a central hearth, open kitchen, and inviting outdoor spaces encourage connection while maintaining the rhythms of everyday home life.

Because each cottage functions as its own household, caregivers form deeper, more personal relationships with the elders they support. This small-home nursing model allows care teams to understand each resident’s routines, preferences, and needs - promoting both clinical excellence and emotional well-being. At its core, the Green House® Cottage model replaces institutional care with a human-centered environment built on dignity, choice, and genuine connection.

As Arkansas continues leading the nation in innovative eldercare solutions, the Green House® model stands as a powerful example of what long-term care can and should be. Communities across our state are proving that skilled nursing can be both highly professional and profoundly compassionate, and that every elder deserves a home where their voice is heard and their life is honored. The Green House® movement is more than a model of care; it is a transformative step toward a better, more dignified future for aging in Arkansas.
